Memory is one of the easier parts of a gaming PC to get right. A 32 GB kit of two DDR5 sticks at DDR5-6000 suits almost every current AMD and Intel gaming build. The bigger issue in 2026 is cost: Tom’s Hardware reports that a memory shortage has doubled or even tripled RAM prices since 2025, so compare current prices before you buy. This guide groups current kits by tier, based on list prices, and names the exact part numbers.

We write from manufacturer specifications and published reviews, mainly Tom’s Hardware’s best RAM guide (updated October 2026), and TechPowerUp’s Ryzen 7 9850X3D test setup. We have not hands-on tested the products mentioned. Building a whole PC? See our gaming PC builds.

How to choose gaming RAM

  • Capacity. Tom’s Hardware calls 16 GB the sweet spot for gaming alone. We list 32 GB (2x 16 GB) kits because they leave room for a browser, voice chat and newer games, and because 32 GB is the most common size for gaming kits.
  • Speed. DDR5-6000 with CAS latency 30 (CL30) is the common target for AMD Ryzen builds. TechPowerUp tests Ryzen X3D chips with DDR5-6000 CL28. Tom’s Hardware notes Intel’s Core Ultra 200S chips can use faster kits, such as DDR5-6400 or 7200.
  • Buy one kit. Buy all your memory as one matched kit. Mixing two separate kits can cause instability, even if they are the same model.
  • Height. RGB kits are tall. If you use a big air cooler, check the cooler’s memory clearance, or choose a low-profile kit.

AMD EXPO or Intel XMP?

Memory runs at a slow default speed until you turn on its profile in the BIOS. AMD EXPO is AMD’s profile format and Intel XMP is Intel’s. Tom’s Hardware advises choosing an EXPO kit for a Ryzen build. Many kits include both profiles, so they work on either platform. Turn on the profile once after you build the PC; without it, a DDR5-6000 kit may run far slower.

Checklist:

  1. DDR4 or DDR5. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. AM5 and Intel LGA 1851 boards are DDR5 only.
  2. Profile. EXPO for AMD Ryzen (AM5), XMP for Intel. Kits with both work in either.
  3. Two sticks. Two sticks are easier to run at full speed than four.
  4. BIOS. Update the motherboard BIOS for best memory support, especially for low-latency kits.

Budget gaming RAM

Corsair Vengeance DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) 6000 CL36 (CMK32GX5M2E6000C36). A plain, low-profile DDR5-6000 kit with an Intel XMP profile. It suits Intel Core Ultra builds; for Ryzen, pick an EXPO kit below.

Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 32GB (2x16GB) 3200 CL16 (CMK32GX4M2E3200C16). For older DDR4 builds, such as AM4 Ryzen or Intel 12th to 14th gen DDR4 boards. It is 34 mm tall, so it fits under large air coolers, and it has both XMP and EXPO profiles.

Mid-range gaming RAM

G.Skill Flare X5 DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) 6000 CL30 (F5-6000J3038F16GX2-FX5). An AMD EXPO kit at DDR5-6000 CL30 with a low heat spreader and no RGB, so it clears large air coolers. It is made for Ryzen builds.

Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) 6000 CL30 (CMH32GX5M2B6000Z30K). A popular RGB kit with both EXPO and XMP profiles at 1.40 V. It works on AMD or Intel.

Premium gaming RAM

G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) 6000 CL30 (F5-6000J3038F16GX2-TZ5NR). Tom’s Hardware’s best-performance 32 GB kit, with EXPO and XMP profiles.

G.Skill Trident Z5 NeoX RGB DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) 6000 CL30 ULL (F5-6000A3038F16GX2-TZ5NXRK). Tom’s Hardware’s best AMD EXPO kit, with tighter “ultra-low latency” timings (CL30-38-38-32) for Ryzen 9000. It is AMD-only, so update your board’s BIOS first.

FAQ

Is 16 GB enough for gaming? Tom’s Hardware says 16 GB is the sweet spot for gaming alone. 32 GB gives more room for multitasking and is the safer choice for a new build.

Will an XMP kit work on AMD? Often yes, but EXPO kits are tuned and tested for Ryzen. Kits with both profiles avoid the question.

Does faster RAM help X3D chips? Less than on other chips, because the large cache covers some memory delay. DDR5-6000 CL30 is a sensible target.

Verdict

For a Ryzen build, buy a DDR5-6000 CL30 EXPO kit: the G.Skill Flare X5 for big air coolers, or the Corsair Vengeance RGB if you want lighting. For Intel, the Corsair Vengeance 6000 XMP kit is the simple choice. For the best Ryzen memory, Tom’s Hardware picks the G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB and NeoX kits.
