Most gaming mice today have sensors that are more accurate than any hand. The real differences are weight, shape, wireless versus wired, button count and battery life. This guide groups popular mice by tier so you can pick the shape and features that fit how you play.

We write from manufacturer specifications, published reviews and documentation. We have not hands-on tested the products mentioned.

How to choose a gaming mouse

  • Weight: lighter mice (around 50 to 65 g) are popular for fast aim in shooters; heavier mice feel steadier.
  • Shape and grip: ergonomic right-handed shapes suit palm grip; symmetrical shapes suit claw and fingertip grip and some left-handed players.
  • Buttons: five or six is plenty for shooters; MMO and macro players benefit from more.
  • Wireless: 2.4 GHz dongles are effectively as responsive as wired for most players. Check battery type: AA or rechargeable.

FAQ

Does DPI matter? Not much past a few thousand. Most players use 400 to 1,600 DPI; higher maximums are marketing more than a real advantage.

Is 8 kHz polling worth it? It can feel smoother on high-refresh monitors but uses more CPU and battery. 1 kHz is fine for most players.

Verdict

The G305 is the easy wireless starting point and the G203 the cheapest wired one. Pick the G502 HERO or Basilisk V3 for more buttons. For competitive shooters, the PRO X SUPERLIGHT 2 and Viper V3 Pro are the light, wireless options.
